About a couple of weeks ago, the
Spice Girls
announced
the dates of their reunion tour. They are all set to rekindle "Girl Powah" in such exotic locations such as Buenos Aires, Madrid and Hong Kong among others. After the announcement of plans for the reunion about a month ago, there was an almost immediate barrage of negative press.
This year saw a couple of successful reunions by British bands
The Police
and
Genesis
, both of whom are surefire future Hall of Famers if I may add. So will the girls be able to carry on the successful string of reunions by British bands by December when their tour kicks off? Or will the string end with the loudest of thuds?
When I first read of the reunion, my reaction was probably the same as yours: Welllll! But then I thought that after ten years and seven children (soon to be eight) later, why not? After all, the
Spice Girls
are recognized as the most successful all-female band of the rock era.
So why is there still so much negative press towards the
Spice Girls
a decade later? Let's see.
It didn't help their reputations later on after their bickering and backbiting became public. In fact I was thinking that when they recorded "Who Do You Think You Are", they were probably saying that to each other afterwards. The conflicts didnt seem to end especially after record executives from their label announced that therapists would be accompanying the girls on the tour. With grand plans for the tour, they wanted to make sure that professional help would be on hand in case any more of the infighting would break out on the road. Oooohhh.
Then there was the report that each of the girls would be paid £10-million each. And as if that weren't enough, each of the girls would be transported by individual lear jets to the tour venues. The jets would be big enough to carry their personal entourage which includes the children and nannies. Certainly after an event like Live Earth which sough to raise consciousness about pollution and global warming, critics were quick to point out that their mode of travel is another example of the excesses of musical superstars. The environmental website greenhelpline.com has calculated that their flights will generate about 9,500 tons of carbon dioxide. Aaaahhh.
Oh Emma, why can't you just stay home and look after your soon to be born baby?
As part of the build-up to the reunion, there will be a greatest hits album to be released later in the year and a TV documentary about their collective and individual careers. Part of the album will be a song released to radio entitled "Woman" which was originally written in 1999 but will be re-recorded and updated. Victoria Beckham aka Sporty Spice, who has been very visible lately, has even offered to get the other girls back into performing shape.
So maybe ten years is a long time for their fans, if there are any left, to see their heroines back in action. Let's do some simple mathematics--the girls will all be in their early to mid thirties, probably out of touch with today's teeners. Their fans are all in their mid to late twenties, maybe more involved with career and family. And then the current generation of teen-agers may only have read about the infighting rather than the height of Girl Power's popularity, if they even care at all.
I wasn't particularly into Girl Power at that time, for obvious reasons. But the
Spice Girls
did provide some catchy tunes which a radio person such as myself grew fond of. My personal favorite was "2 Become 1" and not just because Mel C looked so fine in the video! Now I'm thinking the girls should probably rewrite that song and change it to "5 Become 1" because all five of them ought to get on the same page if they ever want to pull this one off.
